Evolution of Bella Swan as a Character

Imagine living your life being at risk of attack from mysterious creatures wherever you go. Having to have slick agility and great knowledge of how to escape near death situations. Not knowing who you can trust or get help from. In the Twilight Series, this fantasy becomes real. Bella, the main character, goes through all of these struggles when she moves out of her mom’s house in Florida, across the country to Washington to stay with her father. She, as a character, transforms in so many ways. She becomes her own person, and really defends herself when she faces problems. Bella, from the Twilight Series, really emerges as a character when it comes to her change, the effect on the plot, and similarities between characters from other stories and movies.
At the very beginning of the Twilight Series, Bella starts off as a shy ‘new girl’. As she becomes more comfortable with her life transition, she begins to reunite with some old friends. With the following books of the series, her life carries on, leading her into some discomforting situations. Her character begins to evolve at the end of Twilight, when she gets herself into a life threatening situation with a vampire. She gains cleverness when her enemy is trying to kill her. He begins to attack Edward, her newly found love, and to distract him she cuts herself with a piece of glass. That is what saved her life. In the 2 books following, New Moon and Eclipse, she finds herself in the same sort of situations, yet again. Now in Breaking Dawn, she must defend herself against the Volturi when they discover her half mortal-half immortal child. That’s when she becomes really independent and courageous.
Bella’s choice of moving from Florida to Forks, has a huge impact on the plot. Living in Forks changed her life forever. This is where Bella and Edward met. Her and Edward’s relationship started when the two simultaneously go up to the buffet line during their lunch at school. Bella’s clumsiness comes into play when she drops an apple that reflects off the ground back into Edward’s hands. After the awkward conversation that follows this scene, they begin to talk more. Her curiosity gets the best of her as they begin to hang out even more, and she begins to have inferences about Edward. She researches about everything that she suspects of him and figures out he’s a vampire. If she wouldn’t have been so passionate about figuring out what was different about Edward, she never would have gotten herself negatively involved with the Volturi. This aspect of the book is very important to the plot.
A character that Bella relates to is Emily Osment’s character from Cyberbully. Emily’s character begins out as a shy, average student, but her brother’s curiosity got the best of him when she signs up for a social network that is almost identical to Facebook. He hacks her account and makes some disturbing statuses, negatively impacting the rest of her life. This is a vague connection to what happens when Bella gets curious about Edward, and that action negatively impacted the rest of her life. Another connection is how much both characters matured at the end of their stories. With Emily’s character, she overcomes the bullying she was put under and stands up for herself. Bella is the same way, but it just shows differently. When someone she really cares about gets put in danger she stands up for herself and her loved one. Although both stories are almost completely different they are alike a many ways.
The growth as a character when faced with change, the effect on the plot, and similarities with other characters from other books and movies is how Bella from evolves in the Twilight Series. I find it very interesting on how much Bella’s character grows and matures as a character.
